14 December 2012 DAY 237

Friday, 14 December 2012 DAY 237 MOON 9 NEW 0%
“Dad, we are going to see Santa, you know!” – Ezra. We went to see the Big Buddha. Gingerbread house creations in Kahului with the playgroup. Nice craft. Nice song and games and snacks. the drive is not too bad. We saw the sliver of the moon after sunset as we made our way to the swimming pool. The swimming pool light were finally working – so cool, so majestic. The dark part of the moon looked so defined. Never has the moon looked so complete as only a sliver. The gingerbread houses looked great and Viena and Ezra loved eating them as soon as we arrived home. Then, we were away to sit on Santa’s lap. Photos. Hot dogs. Caroling. A great time.

13 December 2012 DAY 236 Art Class and Interuptions

Thursday, 13 December 2012 DAY 236 MOON 8 WANING 2%
Ezra woke up saying, “I want to go to Forrest’s, but we are on this island!” The island feeling really does come through more for some people than others. Oh well, what is life without interruptions. Viena and I again tried to attend art class, but this time the teacher was at a funeral, the other day she was at a wedding, what will tomorrow hold. Viena’s tooth is wiggling out more these days. She seems to have her groove as long as school is not mentioned. Her reading is coming along. Her art is superb. These are the days. Ezra bonked his head on a side view mirror.

12 December 2012 DAY 235 Umbrella Trees

Wednesday, 12 December 2012 DAY 235 MOON 8 WANING 8%
On 12-12-12, everyone woke up. Ezra was up at 5AM and stayed up. The wind is blowing softly. The clouds are white. “Do yellow rabbits like bananas?” Went for a walk around the abandoned golf course of Kapalua. good trails, but forgotten and not really scenic, or wild for that matter. Ezra found a grasshopper in the bathroom. Near sunset we all went to the park. Viena and I braved the waters to go snorkeling with our masks. We saw some sea urchins. Ezra and Viena really do play well together. A laughing fun time. Ezra fell asleep on time, as did a very tired Viena. We read good Hawaiian stories from the library. And then the darkness of the news set in and the spirits of the North traveled star after star to dampen my night.

11 December 2012 DAY 234 Kapalua Trail

Tuesday, 11 December 2012 DAY 234 MOON 8 WANING 15%
Drove to walk the to the Ritz-Carlton. The trail leaves from Napili and goes to Kapalua along the coast. A short trail, but that is where we are these days. We arrived at the Ritz and used their hammocks tied to coconut palm trees. We played in Ritzville the game of baboon tag and shuffleboard while Dwana spoke with Ira about Uppa and the failing of Ira’s marriage. I ran back to the van in my new 4-toed shoes. They gave me 3 blisters. Not my kind of shoes, but sometimes you have to try new things. We came home and played in the swimming pool and they rode on my back and I tried to throw them off. the sunset was nice to view from the park. Bright diffused yellow from behind the lanai extending into the clouds everywhere. Puffy ones over the mountains in the east. A late night trip to the library in Lahaina.

I spoke with Cayce last night and he expounded on his plan to place a house in East Austin. And so the breeze happens and happens some more. A good day of sorts.

Sunday, 9 December 2012 DAY 232 MOON 8 WANING 29%
A travel van trip to Honolua Bay and the beach below the Ritz Carlton. A very manicured lawn. The clouds and rain kept us from staying too long. We saw two pigs behind a fence, Koco and Moco. Ezra and Viena are doing a dance fashion show with sleeping bags, mermaids, spirulina mustaches, blue humpback baby whale, a green water frog. Dwana has a headache. Sunny where we are. Found a centipede in the pool the flowers are so fragrant. Made lots of cookies.

Saturday, 8 December 2012 DAY 231 MOON 8 WANING 36%
I spent all day putting the roof rack on the van. A hot day on top of the van, but after 6 hours our van looks the same as when it did on the mainland. I stubbed my two little pinkies, needing little bandaids. walked to the park playground with Ezra. a birthday party was going on. They played ice-walking and duck-duck goose and ring around the rosy. I wonder what they are playing in other countries. I had lots of good ideas but have yet to write them down. Forgotten. Lost. Saw a rainbow.

Wednesday, 5 December 2012 DAY 228 MOON 8 WANING 56%
Ezra and Viena woke up without screams. So nice. Ezra was just looking at a book and not demanding breakfast. Maybe if they woke up in their own room. Someday in the future. Drove to the DMV. Both Dwana and I pass our written driving test. Took the drug screening test for Hale Makua. I can’t believe I would not pass that test. Came home and went for a run to Kapalua near the Ritz Carlton. The landscape is different up north, more like Palos Verdes. The new shoes gave me a blister, small but significant. Went clover picking in the dark with a flashlight. So good, so peaceful. Uppa is not doing well, on his last days. Mylon lost his trust rating and must start over with his family up North. Ezra and Viena are having a candlelight dinner on the lanai. The prayer flags are hanging. Our lanai is lit up. Warm outdoor weather. Ezra drew a duck, swan, pelican on the window.

Friday, 30 November 2012 DAY 223 MOON 8 WANING 90%
Viena fell on a glass bottle and shattered the bottle, blood and glass everywhere. We were so lucky. Viena was so lucky. She just had a small cut on the side of her hand. Wow. Kids are accidents waiting to happen. Set in motion by the adventure of yesterday. We came home late. Forgot to have Ezra go to the bathroom before bed. He woke up and crawled in our bed, and soon peed in the bed. The linens were taken off the bed and put by the door. Viena tripped over the dirty linens. I wonder how many events I set in motion. Rested most of the day and read books and counted over our lucky stars.

Wednesday, 28 November 2012 DAY 221 MOON 8 FULL 100%
Job interview on the full Moon. I brought back Shaved Ice for everyone. Ezra took too big of a bite and froze his mouth. I swam in the pool and soaked in the hot tub until the planets and stars started joining the party. Witnessed the full moon rising below Venus in the Eastern sky above the mountains as seen through an umbrella tree. The drive into Kahului is nice and right along the coastline. I worked out at 24 hour fitness. I hope my streak continues. Hot and sunny day.

Took the car into Lahaina to register and change over to Hawaiian plates – County of Maui. I finally found a Jamba Juice that served up a Power Peanut Butter Moo. The DMV was quite relaxed for a DMV. I received a call for a job interview tomorrow. Hale Makua. Home Health. I hope it works out. I swam a mile in the pool. I talked with Dwana late at night about all the conversations that she had during the day. Pretty messed up stories that we hear and think about here in the middle of the Pacific. I jumped in the pool late at night with Ezra and Viena. A group of Spanish speaking kids had their attention. Hopefully they will sleep well.

Monday, 26 November 2012 DAY 219 MOON 8 WAXING 83%
Our van is here. The call came. The rains fell this morning. Ezra and I went on a walk to find a lost car in the park. No luck, but walking in the rain was fun. We gave peppermints to the ladies of the front desk – Emma and Jessica. Jessica told Ezra and Viena the fabled Hawaiian story of the Moonbow – quite amazing. I hope we find one – see one. Tim gave me a ride into the port to pick up the van. He has an old beater pickup truck. Afterwards, I went shopping at all the majors – Ross, Costco, Walmart. I probably need to return some items.

I called old friends on the phone today. I went swimming with our new friends Ty, Ciera and Bear. BEar is Ezra’s age. We went over to their place and they gave us a box of toys. Ezra loved them and even wanted to go back to his “Brother Bear’s” Place and grab some more toys. They live 10 units down and Ciera is expecting to deliver Bear a sibling in January. We bought some more furniture, a lazy boy and some plates, dishes and a Christmas Tree. The Christmas tree was easy to set up and looks good on our lanai. Stayed up late talking to Dwana, playing the guitar and reclining in the new lazyboy.

We have made a turkey casserole from the leftover turkey. I went to the store for ingredients for a pumpkin pie. I called everyone from my family and received calls from no one. That is how my 45th Thanksgiving went down. I went to the Park and saw some Hawaiian families celebrating this day of fest. I swam a mile in the pool. I am thankful for this pool.

20 November 2012 DAY 213 Honokowai Park

Tuesday, 20 November 2012 DAY 213 MOON 8 WAXING 43%
We went swimming in the pool with the new pool toys. I walked to Honokowai Park to pick up Ezra’s running shoes that he left last night. Ezra enjoys the pool with his wetsuit and then a warmup in the hot tub. Viena really likes diving under the water. Dwana still has the Maui Blues. She is having a fever and hot stuff. She slept in. Mooning. And receiving calls from the Northland. Viena Ezra and I walked down the street to go shopping at the ABC store. We had pizza. Yum. $5.00 to feed them. Went to the park for the sunset. PLayed with the new sand toys. We met Ty Ciera and Bear and the Little Unknown. I spoke with a woman about a job in Home Health,121120 Maui 0438 so we will see what happens.

19 November 2012 DAY 212 Tides of Change

Monday, 19 November 2012 DAY 212 MOON 8 WAXING 36%
We woke up at 7AM and walked with Ezra and Viena to the beach to the ocean of the Pacific to see if the tide looked any different. High Tide. High tide. No interest in staying. Maui does not seem like it has staying power or places to explore. I need to imagine new places. Our home here at Sunset Terrace is serving us well. The children Ezra and Viena play well here in their own space – bigger than the van. I am looking into a PT job. Any job will be good for the experience. For the stories. For the money. Watched Chevy Chase Vacation. Here and Here. So So. Ezra is so proud of his running shoes. He was running around the park shirtless in the small baby green Patagonia shorts, yellow socks, and those pink bottomed running shoes.

Sunday, 18 November 2012 DAY 211 MOON 8 WAXING 29%
I am not really feeling energetic, or maybe I am just resting up for what will needed to be done in the future, or receiving rest from the nights of driving for the past 6 months and the nights of childhood over the past 6 years. Sleep. Seemed like the thing to do today. Dwana slept on the couch. I slept on the bed. Viena and Ezra played and played kindly. We went swimming later and then over to an apartment garage sale. I purchased some swim goggles. The swimming pool and the hot tub are a nice addition to this apartment, and no one really uses them. I read a little to Ezra while Viena did some of her numbering in her Journal. The sun is out. Met Papa Tim and the girls Coco and Stacia at the pool.

Saturday, 17 November 2012 DAY 210 MOON 8 WAXING 22%
I swan 2 miles in the pool and boy did that wipe me out for the next day. I swam one mile and then everyone came back to the pool in the afternoon, but decided not to swim much, s I stayed and swam another. The rains fell while I was swimming. Nce time. I still need to understand the financials of it all to really rest and relax. Ezra is laying all over me right now. He is such a lovable little guy. We went to bed early. A package arrived from texas with registration and credentials. Went out with Ezra and Viena to see the sliver of the moon. “Bridges are like Rainbows!” Ezra determined since you need a bridge to leave the island. Ezra woke up and wondered when we were going to Mariza’s. Who knows? Off we go!

Friday, 16 November 2012 DAY 209 MOON 8 WAXING 15%
I sat down with Viena and did some school work in her journal. The 16th of the month. Dwana’s birthday in 30 days. We need to go and do. Maui is interesting without a vehicle. The bus coast $8 one way to ride for our family into town. Ezra landed on my back and said, “I love you so much!” Maui has been good for him. But the rest of us feel a little … Lost. Good to experience. We went to the playground near sunset. A birthday party with a pinata was going on. We stayed and played tag at night. We laid down on the grass and stared at the starry night with spaceships and such. Cool, warm breeze always.

15 November 2012 DAY 208 Loud and Cute

Thursday, 15 November 2012 DAY 208 MOON 8 WAXING 9%
Dwana is still not feeling well. I read books to Ezra and Viena on the couch. I am glad to be a Dad. I am lucky to have a life with little children to ground me to simple words and pictures that I can hold and love. They are loud, but cute. Just like the sense – a sense that I have and I am happy that I have and I hope I am able to pass this on to them. Aloha! Went for a walk while our place was being de-ticked. Spent most of the time at the playground. Then we walked over to the Ohana Taco to eat. We played with Luke on the beach who is Ezra’s age. Lots of little small children.

Tuesday, 13 November 2012 DAY 206 MOON 7 WANING 5%
I returned to rental car, but first we went down to Honokowai park and played in the water and the beach. Ezra and Viena might be saturated with beaches like I was saturated with driving all day and all night. I ran back from Lahaina and saw all the development along Black Rock Beach or Honoko’o Beach and Ka’a’napali Beach. Nice, but too many resorts. Too sold out. I saw a double rainbow, almost a full double rainbow while playing with Ezra at the park across the street. The rains fell from a single small cloud, so it seemed, and the winds blew and the green mountains stood tall welcoming the wetness – over and over again.

Monday, 12 November 2012 DAY 205 MOON 7 WANING 12%
I rented a car at 1:00PM Why so late I am not sure. I slept better on the bed than the backpack. Whew! The lesson is always travel with your bedding. Ezra was not being good today. Once we had the car, we drove into Lahaina. Sugar Cane Plantation. Volcano. City. Viena said she was sick and then quickly puked in my backpack while we were in the Ross parking lot. Byebye backpack. We also went shopping at Costco and WalMart and safeway – all the great american stores. What a day of consumerism. Our first in 6 months. We packed the rental car full and then some. The temperatures are cooler in Kahalui compared to Lahaina. Where oh where will our heart find some peace – calls from the Northland.

10 November 2012 DAY 203 Can you say Mokulele?

Saturday, 10 November 2012 DAY 203 MOON 7 WANING 25%
John the once millionaire taxi driver gave us a ride to the airport in Honolulu. We had breakfast at the Japanese Ihop. They wanted Dwana to order in Japanese. We flew Mokulele Airlines right into Kapalua. Amazing. We arrived one hour after the mailman, so he did not drop off our sleeping pads which left us sleeping on our backpacks. But here we are … in Maui.

9 November 2012 DAY 202 Why Waikiki?

Friday, 9 November 2012 DAY 202 MOON 7 WANING 32%
Honolulu – is not Kauai – too many tall buildings. But here we are. “I left our light here last time.” – Ezra. “When are we going to have our van?” – Viena. Sunrise wake up at 5:30AM since 7:30 California Time. We went for a walk on Waikiki. Early. I need an umbrella and a hat. I am looking for a water system with filter and more shirts with hidden zippered pockets. The water is so warm compared to the California Pacific Ocean. Waikiki is built up like Copacabana in Rio. Not much beach. The sand is cool and corally. Ezra wants to know why I am writing in the journal. Sometimes I wonder. Then he asks if I have ever seen spider eggs in the playhouse. Maybe Kira and Zana’s playhouse. Spent the night at Sky Court Waikiki.

Thursday, 8 November 2012 DAY 201 MOON 7 WANING 39%
Lift off. We had made lift off. What next? What next? We mailed so many packages to Maui. Maui. Why Maui? Here we go again. Can you believe? If nothing else, one step closer. On days like these I never feel totally elated. Ezra has a slight fever. He has passed out here in the chair. The morning went great. Closed bank accounts. A stop at Trader Joe’s. Mariza took us to the airport. New friends. New places. New faces. Vacation with the Falcone family. A 5 ½ hour plane ride. I forgot, I should be elated that I am not doing the driving. The flying. The sunset we saw over the clouds. Heavenly. We have nothing, but we have everything we need. We made the walk taxi climb to our shower and bed at the sky court. Here we are in Honolulu.

22 October 2012 – Academy of Science, San Francisco California

22 October 2012 - Academy of Science, San Francisco California

We spent the day at the Academy of Science with cousin Lauren who turns 3 in December. We were able to see lots of fish, sharks, penguins, ostriches, frogs, chameleons, big snakes, butterflies, birds, and lots of people. We thought by going early on a Monday we would have the place to ourselves. Not the case. Many people and organizations utilize their membership to the Academy of Science. We walked though the rain forest and flew over the Earth. We even saw a real rainbow as we were finishing up playing on the playground. Lauren really enjoyed playing with her big girl cousin and trying to keep up with everything they did. Good Job Lauren!

17 October 2012 – Sierra Buttes hike

17 October 2012 - Sierra Buttes hike

Again we tried to go to Upper Sardine Lake, but both Ezra and Viena were sleeping, so we kept driving up as far up the Sierra Buttes as possible and then we hike up as much as Ezra would allow. Maybe next time we will make the summit at the watchtower, but today we were only able to see the watchtower from below as well as the lake where we held our wedding ceremony.

13 October 2012 Starry Nights on 1000 Trails

Saturday, 13 October 2012 DAY 175 MOON 6 WANING 15%
A very starry night last night, as well as this night. A day spent in a wormhole of sorts – in the life and ways of 1000 Trails living. The people. The workers. The youth. the kids. The footed homes. The crazy stories. The elder woman with cane. The Maui woman. Ping pong stories. Line dancing. Swimming pools. Sunsets. All while a corporation meeting was going on in another wormhole and this addition to our life. Ezra. Camped at the 1000 Trails.

11 October 2012 – Yosemite National Park

11 October 2012 - Yosemite National Park

“To be our not to be”. After our six months of travel we have never been shutout of a campground, but we never faced a more formidable foe than the campgrounds of Yosemite Valley. “Full” “Full” “Full” “Full”. – on a Thursday night in October after a thunderstorm. Oh well, better than being stuck in traffic. We drove on down the road after briefly seeing this great majestic valley.

10 October 2012 – King’s Canyon National Park

10 October 2012 - King's Canyon National Park

King’s canyon is aptly named. Big rock faces on either side with a river running between and a road leading to nowhere … nowhere but our campground. We spent to nights here in King’s Canyon, because the nights were so royal. We laid out a tarp in a clearing and just stared out into space discovering spaceships and shooting stars, and imagining whatever else the heavens might hold. Then we would wake up and go on a bike ride or a walk to ground our feet and spokes. We must have seen a dozen shooting stars and a dozen spaceships, one even had blinking green lights.

06 October 2012 – The Narrows, Zion

06 October 2012 - The Narrows, Zion

What can I say? Go here now! Go here while you still can!
Walk the narrows before the clock turns twelve. We awoke in the darkness so as to stay on step ahead of the throng of people that visit this site daily. We walked the paved shadowy trail along a river enclosed by massive rock walls. We walked until the paved trail ended in a gaggle of seemingly discarded tennis shoes and a storage of walking sticks. Then we kept on walking with our footprint erased in the sandy ground of the canyon under cold flowing river water. We walked until Dwana “I’m done!” And so then I took Viena and Ezra on individual adventures to see what was around the next bend and the next. My feet became numb, but the addictive scenes upriver were worth the pain. We thawed out on the return when sunshine was finally found. Our adventure complete as others were just beginning theirs.

05 October 2012 – Zion National Park, Utah

05 October 2012 - Zion National Park, Utah

Congratulations Brother Logan and Sister Su on bringing a new Weems into the world on this day. My advice – find as many rope swings as possible, except that rope swing in Cousin Richard’s back yard. We found this rope swing just down from our campsite along the river in Zion National Park. I do not know the name of the river. No one really talked too much about the river, because the size is more like a creek right now. The water is clear and cold and shallow and slow moving and just perfect for Erza and Viena to jump into. I love finding little jewels like this for the children in our travels. Actually, Ezra found this one. He has a “Good/bad” habit of wandering off down coastlines. This time I followed him and we ended up here. When Viena spotted us having such a good time she bouldered on down the rocky sandy riverbank. Today, was our rest day since a new cousin and an older and younger brother celebrated birth.

04 October 2012 – Bryce Canyon National Park – Utah

04 October 2012 - Bryce Canyon National Park - Utah

We had to wake up early, but again the reward was worth the early morning shakeup. The sunrise was beautiful during the Rim Trail walk at Bryce Canyon National Park. We thought we would be alone, but just as we were beginning our hike a big bus of tourists stopped and about 50 or so well dressed – warmly dressed Asian tourist with Nikons and Canons tumbled out of the bus and headed down the trail. And shortly after that bus unloaded, another bus showed up. The good news is that they only walked 200 meters down the trail to a lookout – Bryce Lookout, whereas, we continued the 3 miles down the Rim trail to Sunrise Point.

01 October 2012 – Airports and Ancient Lands

01 October 2012 - Airports and Ancient Lands

Ezra has been on a Texas time-schedule ever since we left Texas, which means he is waking up at 5:00AM Phoenix time. Luckily we had to help out at the Scottsdale Airport that morning. Ezra loved watching the planes and Jets take off from an up close perspective. “I want to ride on one of those.” is a typical Ezra comment. Soon, young Jedi-Ezra Knight, soon – once you master time zone changes.

27 September 2012 – El Paso Texas

27 September 2012 - El Paso Texas

Look Mexico is over there. “I see some cars!” – Ezra. I was trying to teach the concept of different countries, and how we have different states in the USA, but Mexico is another country. Ezra just wanted to know if we were going to cross the border into Mexico, and if there were any toys in Mexico. Viena prepared this photo of two of her dolls sleeping in a dorm room. After driving through Texas, we all had a good night’s rest.

25 SEPTEMBER 2012 – COUSINS OF THE WORLD UNITE

25 SEPTEMBER 2012 - COUSINS OF THE WORLD UNITE

We found some long long cousins on the Ford-Selanoff side of the family up in North Austin. We had a great time playing on the back yard trampoline in the evening heat. Mattie is two weeks older than Ezra and Mary is two months older than Viena. Marshall is 12 and Matthew is 1. We enjoyed singing songs on the trampoline and playing duck-duck-goose or caterpillar-caterpillar-buttterfly. That is what I was doing while Dwana and Tina were catching up on almost 35 years of what has been happening since they last saw each other as toddlers.

23 SEPTEMBER 2012 – Anthony is Hooked Up!

23 SEPTEMBER 2012 - HOOK EM HORNS

After visiting the Austin Children’s museum on free museum day with cousin Sara and mini-cousins Deklon, Milo and Izzy Pearl, we went on a more dangerous investigative cousin adventure. We tried and succeeded in finding Young Cousin Anthony’s dorm room on the campus of the University of Texas.  We are happy to report that Anthony looks great, his room is bigger than I had on campus, and he even has a view of the UT tower. Hook ’em Horns!

20 SEPTEMBER 2012 – MAMMOTH BEACH SYMPHONY – GULF COAST TEXAS

20 SEPTEMBER 2012 - MAMMOTH BEACH SYMPHONY - GULF COAST TEXAS

Well our last full day on the Gulf Coast was a busy one. We started out by visiting the Symphony – but really the outing was for people wanting to join the symphony. The outing was next to a museum with lots of bones and shells and gems and rocks and carvings – all for free. Afterwards we went to eat at a restaurant that was built on the location of a Mammoth tusks being uncovered 10 years ago. Who knew? Quintana beach was next and jumping into the Gulf of Mexico waters – warm and salty with waves that would not scare Ezra. The water felt good and cooled you down from the heat which was still around 90. The evening was spent cleaning off in the Angelton rec center pool where Ezra played in the flowing River and Viena tested out the water slide. Dad-dad was with us and escorted us from place to place with his stories of the region. We all slept well on this night.

19 SEPTEMBER 2012 – Viena and Ezra learn to drive. West Columbia – Texas

19 SEPTEMBER 2012 - Viena and Ezra learn to drive. West Columbia - Texas

So far so good. Just needed to post this photo. Ezra and Viena have been so cute playing with each other. They learned the love for these small electric vehicles while visiting Jack and Henry’s farm in Wisconsin. Both Ezra and Viena have been having a blast rising around the golf course and dodging oak tree branches and fire ant hills.

18 September 2012 – West Columbia, the old Homesteds

18 September 2012 - West Columbia, the old Homesteds

We went on a field trip with Dad-Dad and he showed us around all the houses that he had lived in here in West Columbia. This is the upstairs in Great-grandmothers house. Quite a place. Rents by the night. Halloween is Free.

The old tree is in the backyard of the house where I grew up and me and my brothers would play for hours on the rope swing. This oak tree is one of the few things that actually looks bigger, alot bigger than when I was a little boy.

12 september 2012 – Lake Jackson Texas Aquarium

10 september 2012 - Lake Jackson Texas Aquarium

Granma took us around town to see the free aqaurium, and boy was this place every worth the money. We were extra lucky since today was fish feeding day, so the fish were extra excited. Lots of big fish. They even had a touch tank that had crabs with half of their pincher cut off. Even with this deformation I almost jumped through the roof when I touch one of the crabs and the crab lurched at me with his half claw. Ezra really enjoyed seeing me jump.

09 SEPTEMBER 2012 – pOINTS North, West Columbia Texas.

09 SEPTEMBER 2012 - pOINTS North, West Columbia Texas.

We arrived in West Columbia Texas. This photo is of the driving range on the golf course. The sunset was amazing. In the morning and in the evening is the best time to move about outside. Ezra and Viena are biking around a helicopter landing pad that was built when Columbia Lakes golf course was renowned. Now, the place is just known by us. OK.

06 September 2012 – Barton Springs Austin Texas

06 September 2012 - Barton Springs Austin Texas

Ezra Viena Dad-Dad and I were at the local swimming hole – Barton Springs – a great place to go in this heat. Viena was going to climb out of the water near the rocky shore when I hear – “The Shriek” – At first I thought it was just another one of the tired sounds of the afternoon, but then I saw her running through the water.

“Water Snake – Water Snake” she finally was able to tell us. Now, unlike Ezra, Viena is scared of lots of creatures, so even after the shriek, the running through the water and the claims of WaterSnake, I still thought it was probably a small little earthworm. But lo and behold – we saw this snake right where Viena was about to step. I am not sure what type of snake, but Ezra said a “Zebra Snake!”

05 SEPTEMBER 2012 – Willie Nelson Tribute – Austin

05 SEPTEMBER 2012 - Willi Nelson Tribute - Austin

You guys are always on my mind. We were able to walk a little in fowntown Austin which is right by the river. Dad-Dad Ezra and I rode bikes back to the RV PArk while Viena Gramma and Dwana walked home in the heat along the river unshaded with sunshine shining down.

“You are my sunshine my only sunshine you make me happy when skies are grey
You’ll never know dear how much I love you please don’t take my sunshine away”

05 SEPTEMBER 2012 - Austin Children's Museum

Uncle Cayce surprised Ezra and Viena at the Austin Children’s Museum. A great place to spend the afternoon, especially when the temperature is 101 outside.

04 september 2012 – addictions and violence

04 september 2012 - addictions and violence

I was not going to use a photo, but this one seemed appropriate. Viena kept saying, “OK, I’m just going to have one more bite.” And then she would have another and another scoop of the fresh guacamole that I created. She was definately addicted – we all were. Moments before she was crying because of my violent act in the swimming pool. We are tested so many times as parents and people. Viena kicked me hard in the gut from her flotation device, so I violently flipped her over. She did not realize that she could hurt me and I lost it. I have flipped her many other times in the pool, but I flipped her this time with anger.

I would like everyone to take a moment to think about violence – all types, physical, mental, verbal, positional. And now take a longer moment to think about Non-violence.

Are you still thinking? Good.

02 september 2012 Jerome and Keisha’s Wedding Reception – McNay Art Museum San Antonio

02 september 2012 Jerome and Keisha's Wedding Reception - McNay Art Museum San Antonio

A great place to hold a reception.

02 SEPTEMBER 2012

Here we are all cleaned up and about to watch the union of my friend Jerome and Keisha at their wedding in San Antonio. The wedding was great. I was able to see some old friends from college. Ezra and Viena enjoyed the procession of the Bridesmaids and groomsmen for the wedding and reception. They had some good music and some moves. Ezra is definitely going to add some of the moves that he saw to his repertoire of growing dance moves.

01 SEPTEMBER 2012 – Welcome back to Texas

01 SEPTEMBER 2012 - Welcome back to Texas

No fire ants. But Ezra did pick up a large red ant, which quickly bit him. Ezra woke up from one of his Van-naps singing “I’m bringing home a baby bumble bee”. So, we felt the need to change the song to “I’m bringing home an big ole red ole ant – Ouch it stung my pants” We might need to add additional lyrics to include “”I’m bringing home a big ole huge red wasp”, which Ezra picked up at Aunt Jeans and Uncle Pat’s house. I quickly slapped it out of his hands – which made him cry, but luckily the red wasps did not sting him. While we were swimming in the backyard pool a bull-frog jumped into the deep end. I swam down to try and catch the frog but he was too fast, or I was too scared to grab him. I chased him over to the shallow area where Ezra was able to catch him. He was so excited. He walked with Uncle Pat over to the trees, but when he left the protected gated swimming pool – Rocky, the big house dog wanted to see what Ezra had and the excited started all over again. Everyone survived. Enjoying Texas.

30 august 2012 - video Ladders of Mesa Verde. Rated: A for awesome, some strong language and steep cliff sides.

“Don’t look down ‘ was the advice the Ranger gave us. He also said the ruins were created by Aliens and some of the sections were used for prisons. This bear was on the road at 2AM. We watched him for about 15 minutes before he ran into the woods.

30 AUGUST 2012 - Mesa Verde National Park Colorado

The ladders. Someone needs to bring in a bunch of spider monkeys and see how much fun they have.

30 August 2012 - Mesa Verde National Park - Colorado

Glad they finally had some supporting structures to ease my mind when following a speedy 3 year old.

30 August 2012 - Mesa Verde National Park - Colorado

Did I mention the attention span of Ezra. At this point he was being entertained by a young student from France who was making faces and Ezra was imitating. Obviously, the French have a small attention span as well.

30 August 2012 - Mesa Verde National Park - Colorado

The rest after the Balcony House.

30 August 2012 - Mesa Verde National Park - Colorado

The 32 foot laddder. Not recommend for young children. Viena did spectacular. Dwana did great. Ezra was wonderful. I was a wreck, especially up 25 feet following behind Ezra and Ezra moving fast – just like the monkeybars. My heartrate was about 120 bpm after climbing the ladder.

30 August 2012 - Mesa Verde National Park - Colorado

Ezra and Lucas on the scoot bike. James and Foley on the Tall Bike. Viena on two feet.

27 August 2012 - Boise Idaho Burning Man Tall Bike Festival

As we visited James, he was having withdrawal symptoms from not participating in the Burning Man festival. So we tried to find time to do crazy stuff like ride around town on some tall bikes. In the background is one of his creations that he took to Burning man last year. Easy to ride. Difficult to Mount and dismount.

26 August 2012 – Boise Idaho Boogie Boarding Boise River

26 August 2012 - Boise Idaho Boogie Boarding Boise River

A man-made drop into a hole of the Boise River. I tried about 4 times before the River accepted me and for an eternity I laid on a boogie board in front gallons of rushing water going nowhere. You had to jump at the “waterfall” at an angle and the current would either place you in front of the rushing water and hold you or the current would spit you out and send you down the river. After finishing my heart rate was about 120 bpm. I wish I would have had a life vest, helmet and boogie strap. People just hang out here all day long. Where would you hang out in 100 degree heat?

24 AUGUST 2012 - Ezra and the slug

Ezra has had a great time performing all sorts of scientific dissections on the local slugs of the Olympic Peninsula. He finally was able to gather some secret slug information after intense interrogation techniques. “Slugs turn into butterflies!”, he told us one night before bed.

24 AUGUST 2012 - Closing Ceremony of Olympics

Ezra biking away down the Elk Creek Trail. We saw some strange looking Poop at the beginning of the trail that looked like something had been eating acorns. We guessed Elk and we were right. We tracked the Elk up the mountainside and were rewarded with a sighting of a small family of 6 good sized Elk.

16 AUGUST 2012 - 44th Birthday La Push Pacific Ocean

I took this picture moments before I entered the pacific ocean for the first time in 4 moons. A chilling re-entry to the West. I was going to catch 44 waves with the boogie board, but they were so nice I decided to count each wave with a magnitude 10 factor.

16 AUGUST 2012 - 44th Birthday on the Bogacheil River

A perfect place to rest our heads after a full day. The big dipper resting right above our heads.

10 AUGUST 2012 – ESCAPE FROM MONTANA

10 AUGUST 2012 - ESCAPE FROM MONTANA

We finally made the escape from Montana. We found an old abandoned sewage tunnel that was only half full. Ezra and Viena had no problem navigating the waters. We are in Idaho now breathing fresh Idahoian Air. Feels nice. Our van is breathing much easier now as well. So far the air conditioning has worked climbing all the mountain passes. Pacific Ocean here we come.

10 AUGUST 2012 - EZRA PUNCTURES TONGUE

Ezra loves this photo. Ezra also loves running around late at night after he has had a nap and the rest of us are ready for bed. Ezra was trying to climb down from a high chair and slipped and hit his bottom chin on the hard chair seat sending his tooth through his tongue. All while Dwana and I were feet away trying to decide the next place to rest our head. Maybe we need to go back to safe isolated Montana and have Ezra suck on a Glacier. “I’m OK Mom!” Ezra says. And he is OK.

01 AUGUST 2012 – HUCKLEBERRY SNOWCONES ON LOGAN PASS HANDCYCLIST

01 AUGUST 2012 - HUCKLEBERRY SNOWCONES ON LOGAN PASS

We had a great start to the month of August. We woke up in our campground at sunrise and the good thing – no bears around. We drove a half mile to the Free Bus shuttle parking lot that takes us up to the 6,646 foot Logan Pass. I was going to park in the area that would be in shade in the afternoon near the trees, but decided not to when I looked closer and saw that a black bear was rolling around in the forest greener right 10 feet from where I was going to park. We decided to unload Ezra, Viena, Dad-Dad and Granma and the food right next shuttle. The parking lot attendant said we had a good excuse. We were first in line for the 7:00AM shuttle up to Logan Pass. The ride up “Going to the Sun” road is crazy amazing – like flying in a small plane low through the mountains. The road is partly under new construction, and has been for years, which is why the Park started using the shuttle system – which works great, but some say is scheduled to end once the construction ends in 5 years. Hopefully, the shuttles will be around next time we are in Glacier. We arrived at the pass just as the sun was rising over the tall mountain peaks. We quickly started climbing the large wooded steps up to the snow. We came this time to Logan Pass with a purpose. I brought along two inflatables to sled down the remaining snow. After performing a test run by myself, I convinced Dwana, Ezra and Viena to join in on the reindeer fun. The snow was great and fast and produced many smiles and the laughter. Afterwards we celebrated with huckleberry snowcones that we created right on the spot. The curious Mountain Goat (Sepak) on the nearby ridge almost came down to join us. Large Marmots and Large Ravens also kept close quarters as we churned and churned our refreshing drinks on the snow underneath the majestic mountains and August morning sunshine.

A great place to sled on the first on August.

05 AUGUST 2012

We love this campground.

01 AUGUST 2012 - LOGAN PASS

What is the fun of sledding if you are not going to flip?

01 AUGUST 2012 - Huckleberry Snowcones

We quenched our thirst with huckleberry snowcones on the Hidden Lake Trail. The trail ironically was closed a half mile ahead due to a Bear who was eating huckleberries near the trail?

WHO NEEDS A GO PRO?

01 AUGUST 2012 - HANDCYCLIST ASCENT OF LOGAN PASS

Patrick Cote’s photo in the Daily Inter Lake thursday identified the handcyclist as U.S. Air Force veteran Steve Taylor. Today’s adventure started early as a race to be first in line at the Apgar Transit Center since the first shuttle bus was scheduled to depart at 7am and we missed the one the day before by about 5 minutes. As we pulled into the closest parking spot …wait wait …wait a minute! There’s a big black bear right there! Let Dad Dad get out and go get us first in line for the shuttle and I’ll drive our group up to where the bus stops. Shortly, the shuttle bus arrives; the bus fills to capacity; the bus waits for the bear to cross the road; and the bus departs as express-non stop to the top. Destination: LOGAN PASS. Time: 6:58 am. Off to a good start. Hooray! As the early morning sun began to make shadows there appeared to

Our camping facilities do not have any showers, so we visit the local spas. The spire of the Pinnacles in the background.

31 JULY 2012 - RAFTING? THE MIDDLE FORK OF THE FLATHEAD RIVER

We found the popular rafting spot. Over a hundred rafters must have unloaded while we were playing and picnicking in the middle fork of the flathead river. The river guides did not seem too excited that we were riding their rapids in our Costco inflatable in front of their high paying customers.

30 July 2012 – Ezra – Yellow Jersey – Trandem GLACIER NP

The bike path has been a great plus to this campsite.

30 JULY 2012 - Glacier National Park - Calm Lake, Beautiful Mountains

For the most part, the lake has been calm.

30 JULY 2012 - GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Birch Bark bracelets – all the rave here in Glacier National Park. Viena and Ezra were in their groove this evening as we walked along the pebbly shores of Lake Mcdonald during sunset. Dwana, Granma and Dad-Dad were listening to the evening ranger program on Native Americans in Glacier. Earlier in the day at the lake, Ezra wanted to be flipped over on his raft, so I flipped him over – that’s how hot things are here – glad we have a lake to cool the heat.

28 JULY 2012 – BLACK BEAR ENCOUNTER – APGAR CAMPGROUND

28 JULY 2012 - BLACK BEAR ENCOUNTER - APGAR CAMPGROUND

Viena and Ezra carefully looking at the Black bear behind our tent.

28 JULY 2012 - BLACK BEAR ENCOUNTER - APGAR CAMPGROUND

Good Morning! This black bear was wandering around behind our tent went we woke up on Saturday morning. He was enjoying eating some of the plants and trees that grew in a 50 yard area of trees and growth in between campground loops. The rangers finally had to come and “scare” him off.

27 JULY 2012 – GLACIER NATIONAL PARK – MONTANA

28 JULY 2012 - GLACIER NATIONAL PARK - MONTANA

we caught the early morning free shuttle that took us to Logan Pass. If you do not go early, expect traffic. We found a patch of snow to play in. The views were amazing.

28 JULY 2012 - GLACIER NATIONAL PARK - MONTANA

We finally received views of Glacier National Park. Worth the drive and the 4 days spent in Billings. The weather has been wonderful. This photo is from Lake McDonald in the West side of the park. The water is cold, but not too cold. Ezra and Viena have both loved playing in the water. And the good news … no bugs. The campground is packed full, but we were able to find a spot and then we upgraded when the neighbors left. We picked up my Mom and Dad our first night in the park and then drove the “Going to the Sun” run during the night when the sun was going away. A pretty amazing drive to take during the night. At Logans Pass were saw two Big Horn sheep feeding in the turnout. The were not scared off by our car and we just sat and watched them for a while.

23 JULY 2012 ESCAPE FROM BILLINGS MONTANA

23 JULY 2012 - ESCAPE FROM BILLINGS - ON THE ROAD AGAIN

We finally escaped from Billings. Here is a picture from Billings at the local Riverside park at Sunset. We are now in Bozeman and hope to enter Glacier National Park at around Midnight. Our Air conditioning is still not working properly, but a Ford dealership in Kalispell is going to try a spell at the repair.

I guess every trip must have a beginning and an ending and somewhere in between. Somewhere in between is where we are now. Somewhere in the middle of Montana. We needed new tires so I bought some Michelins at Costco. The Costco salesperson mentioned I needed an alignment, so I took the van to be aligned. The alignment guys said I needed new ball joints. We have been stuck in automotive maintenance mode here in Billings. Today, the van will have the AC overhauled. And tonight we hope to return to a National park. So, we have had some down time which is always good for reflecting on things. EZRA has been very entertaining – always is. You heard the “Where are the Indians” quote while viewing Mount Rushmore, well here are some others.

Montana has a BIG SKY, with lots of clouds and we were all staring at the clouds and I said, “Look, I see a butterfly shape in the clouds”.

Viena said, “I see a dolphin!”

Ezra said, “I see a Dragon!”

I said, “Look, I see the letter E in the clouds!”

Viena said, “I see a car!”

Ezra said, “I see a dragon!”

I said, “Look, I see a face in the clouds!”

Viena said, “I see a flower!”

Ezra said, “I see a dragon!”

Ezra likes Dragon, and Ezra likes to make messes. We have been reading a story that Ezra loves about Marley the messy dog. And yesterday afternoon, Ezra was eating and he made a big mess everywhere and

I said, “Ezra, why do you have to make such big messes!”

and he replied, “because I’m a little boy!”

And then the other day when we were going to the swimming pool at the hotel we passed two grandmotherly ladies and Ezra said, “We are going to the swimming pool!”

and the lady said, “No Way!”

and Ezra said, “and we are going down the water slide!”

and the lady said, “No Way!”

and Ezra asked, “you want to come?”

and the lady said, “No Way!”

We have been having fun here in Billings while the van receives needed repairs.

As some musician said, “when you’re down and troubled and you need a helping hand … slide down a water slide!”

17 JULY 2012 – DINOSAURS AND MOSQUITOES SOUTH DAKOTA

We really enjoyed seeing the Dinosaurs.Viena uncovered lipstick and a bracelet at the “dig site”. So, we know Dinosaurs sometimes like to dress up.

17 JULY 2012 - DINOSAURS and MOSQUITOES

17 JULY 2012 - DINOSAURS and MOSQUITOES

We traveled through the night. A prairie lightning storm showed the way across the flat farm lands of the mid-west. Just West of Duluth Minnesota, we lost all the sense of trees and wetlands, but not before they left one last impression on us. We stopped shortly before sunset at a local playground in Warba, Minnesota so Ezra and Viena could play a little bit before bedtime. this gave me a little time to re-organize our new totes and strap them on to the top of the van. Everything was going good, a few bugs here and there … but we were not prepared for the impending onslaught of mosquitoes that would live in my memories all night long. I started seeing a few more mosquitoes and then as I had both hands full with straps and totes while standing on top of the van wearing only shorts, flip-flops and a t-shirt – they struck, and very quickly I was being eaten alive by what must have been a thousand mosquitoes. I yelled to the others, but they were already heading for the van and shutting the doors, leaving me on top needing to strap down 3 totes. I tried furiously for about a minute, but then insanely jumped off the van and retreated to the inside of the van as well, where another battle was going on. We drove to the next town slapping bugs for the next 30 minutes. The totes were unstrapped on top of the van. We were safe and heading out of the lakes of Minnesota and into the prairies of the Dakotas. This photo was taken moments before the attack. Now I know why Dinosaurs are extinct.

12 JULY 2012 – ferry ride across lake michigan

12 JULY 2012 - ferry ride across lake michigan

We took a short cut to Wisconsin by taking a four hour ferry ride across Lake Michigan. The accommodations were much like the slow ferry of Cordova – lawn chairs on the bow of the boat. The only difference was the air temperature was about 20 degrees warmer and the skies were clear. We were able to soak up the sunset and then gaze at the constellations during the night. The ferry arrived at midnight in Wisconsin and then we drove through the night. I much preferred the lawn chairs to the chair in our van.
